My Journey to Citizenship

Marcos received his citizenship in November of 2020 with the help of Catholic Charities of Pueblo's Immigration program.

My name is Marcos and I have been in living in the United States for approximately 47 years now. Upon my first arrival into the United States I resided in San Antonio, Texas. I lived with my uncle who opened his doors for me to stay. The rest of my family was in Mexico, my children, my siblings, basically everyone. I really missed them, and I just wanted to spend time with them. I would try to visit them, but I knew I had to be in the United States to work and provide for them.

I faced many challenges with moving around and not speaking the English language. My boss at the ranch was Japanese and his English was difficult to understand. Since I already had a tough time with English, I had to adapt to speak to him with signs and gestures. My boss liked my work ethic and petitioned for me to become a resident during the Ronald Reagan Amnesty. I was happy that he offered to help me begin this step. While this was in the process I decided to venture out and obtained employment elsewhere. During this time, I had an old coworker from the Blanca Colorado ranch who told me that the old boss was looking for me. When I contacted him, he gave me the best news I could possibly hear; he had my Permanent Residency card. I was consumed with emotions and felt excited and relieved all at the same time. After obtaining my residency card I moved back to Texas. The permanent residency card gave me the opportunity to visit my family more often and I wanted to take it. With this I was able to visit my family more but only for a certain amount of time.

Fast forward to October 2019, Catholic Charities of Pueblo offered me the opportunity to obtain my citizenship. We ran into a couple of obstacles, but they went above and beyond to help me through the process. Thankfully, with their help I became a Naturalized Citizen of the United States in November 2020. I am very happy that I was given this opportunity and I plan to go visit my family even more. I also don’t have to worry about how long I can stay to visit them or keep track of when I need to return. I want to thank everyone that helps us immigrants achieve our dreams. Becoming a United States Citizen was one of my dreams and with the help of Catholic Charities I was able to achieve it. My journey was hard, but I finally made it.

Marcos - Ciudadano de los Estados Unidos Mi nombre es Marcos y he estado viviendo en los Estados Unidos durante aproximadamente 47 años. A mi primera llegada a los Estados Unidos viví en San Antonio, Texas. Vivía con mi tío que me abrió las puertas para que me quedara. El resto de mi familia estaba en México, mis hijos, mis hermanos, básicamente todos. Realmente los extrañaba y solo quería pasar tiempo con ellos. Intentaría visitarlos, pero sabía que tenía que estar en los Estados Unidos para trabajar y mantenerlos. Mientras vivía en Texas, trabajé en la construcción durante unos 27 años. Después de trabajar en la construcción durante todos esos años, conseguí un trabajo en la agricultura en Blanca Colorado en un rancho. Esto me llevó a Colorado para trabajar en los campos de chile. Colorado me gustó tanto que no quería volver a Texas. El dueño del rancho nos proporcionó todo lo que necesitábamos. Vivíamos en el mismo rancho para el que trabajábamos y teníamos transporte, comidas y todo lo que necesitábamos para sobrevivir. Cuando eres indocumentado, es difícil comenzar una vida aquí en los Estados Unidos. Enfrenté muchos desafíos al moverme y no hablar el idioma inglés. Mi jefe en el rancho era japonés y su inglés era difícil de entender. Como ya tiene dificultades con el inglés, tuve que adaptarme para hablarle con señas y gestos. A mi jefe le gustó mi ética de trabajo y me peticiono para poder conviérteme en residente permanente durante la Amnistía de Ronald Reagan. Me alegré de que se ofreciera a ayudarme a comenzar este paso. Mientras esto estaba en proceso, decidí aventurarme y obtuve un empleo en otro lugar. Durante ese tiempo, tuve un antiguo compañero de trabajo del rancho Blanca Colorado que me dijo que el patrón me estaba buscando. Cuando me comuniqué con él, me dio las mejores noticias que pude escuchar; tenía mi tarjeta de residencia permanente. Estaba consumido por las emociones y me sentí emocionado y aliviado al mismo tiempo. Después de obtener mi tarjeta de residencia, regresé a Texas. La tarjeta de residencia permanente me dio la oportunidad de visitar a mi familia con más frecuencia y quería tomarla. Con esto pude visitar más a mi familia, pero solo por una cierta cantidad de tiempo. Avanzado a octubre de 2019, Caridades Católicas de Pueblo me ofreció la oportunidad de obtener mi ciudadanía. Nos encontramos con un par de obstáculos, pero ellos hicieron todo lo posible para ayudarme en el proceso. Afortunadamente, con su ayuda me convertí en Ciudadano Naturalizado de los Estados Unidos en noviembre de 2020. Estoy muy feliz de que se me haya dado esta oportunidad y planeo ir a visitar a mi familia aún más. Tampoco no tengo que preocuparme por cuánto tiempo puedo quedarme para visitarlos o cuándo debo regresar. Quiero agradecer a todos los que nos ayudan a los inmigrantes a lograr nuestros sueños. Convertirme en ciudadano de los Estados Unidos era uno de mis sueños y con la ayuda de Caridades Católicas pude lograrlo. Mi viaje fue duro, pero finalmente lo logré.
